Singapore: Indian-origin man sentenced to 10 months in jail for attempting to have sex with minor

A 50-year-old man in Singapore recently received a 10-month jail sentence for engaging in a sexual act with a minor. The incident, which took place on December 6, 2021, involved a 15-year-old girl and occurred during the school holidays, according to a Singaporean newspaper.

The two initially met by chance at a multi-storey parking lot.

According a report by The Straits Times, the girl was seeking a quiet place to attend an online meeting with her school counsellor, while Subramaniam Thaburan Rangasamy, a first warrant officer with the Singapore Armed Forces, was preparing to leave for work on his motorcycle.

After the girl accidentally fell and hit a door, Subramaniam came to her aid. In gratitude, she brought him a can of chrysanthemum tea, leading to a conversation between them on the staircase of the parking lot, the report said.

The encounter escalated to a point where they became intimate; the girl performed a sex act on Subramaniam, who also attempted a sexual act on her.

Following the incident, they exchanged contact information and communicated via WhatsApp, although their messages were not sexually explicit. Two days later, on December 8, 2021, the girl filed a police report feeling that Subramaniam had exploited her, The Straits Times reported.

During the legal proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sunil Nair stated that Subramaniam was fully aware of the girl’s age and that there was no coercion or force involved in their intimacy, as quoted by The Straits Times.

Subramaniam pleaded guilty to one count of sexually penetrating a minor under the age of 16 in January, and two additional charges were considered during his sentencing. Following his arrest, Subramaniam was suspended from all military duties.
