UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday appointed James Cleverly as the new Home Secretary after he sacked Suella Braverman over her remarks on Palestine.
James Cleverly has been serving as the Foreign Secretary since September last year, and will now take on the Home Office.
Suella Braverman had suggested that police “play favourites” when policing protests and claimed they largely ignored “pro-Palestinian mobs” during recent demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war. She also published an opinion piece without Rishi Sunak’s approval calling a protest in London for a ceasefire in Gaza as “hate marches”.
With Braverman’s sacking, experts said Rishi Sunak seemed to have brought forward a long-planned reshuffle to bring in allies and remove ministers he felt were not performing.
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron also returned to the UK government as the Foreign Secretary.
