In a major jolt to Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), ahead of February 2024 elections, his wife Bushra Bibi’s name has been added to the ‘Exit Control List’ – the government’s list of those who are prohibited from leaving the country – amid talks of her imminent arrest. The name has been added on the basis of a formal request by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Bibi appeared before the NAB for questioning in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case on Monday. She was questioned about the reason behind the formation of the trust and how her close friend Farhat Shehzadi alias Farhat Gogi was linked to the case, said local sources.
According to sources, NAB is in possession of some important evidence against her, which, if proved, will lead to her arrest.
CNN-News18 had earlier report on how Bibi’s arrest is likely due to the evidence, according to sources, which may change her status from witness to accused.
The Al-Qadir Trust corruption case pertains to allegations that PTI chief Khan and Bibi, a spiritual healer from a deeply conservative family, obtained billions of rupees and land worth hundreds of kanals from a real estate firm for legalising PKR 50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the UK during the previous PTI government.
It is alleged that proceeds of wrongdoing were transferred to her extended family and that she stashed 14 billion rupees in more than 100 accounts across Pakistan and Middle East banks.
Sources told News18 that the NAB is likely to conclude its probe soon and will file reference charge sheet in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case case.
It is one of the two cases Imran Khan is embroiled in, the other being the Toshakhana case.
Khan is facing scores of legal cases on myriad charges, including revealing state secrets, incitement to violence and terrorism. The charges were levelled under the government of Khan’s successor and top rival, former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, who made way for caretaker prime minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on August 14, 2023.
